What is Heart Valve Disease?

Heart valve disease is a condition in which your heart's valves aren't operating as they should – failing to open or close properly or leak – which interferes with the blood flow through your heart. Faulty heart valves have three different variations:

  • Regurgitation – This occurs when your valve doesn't close tightly, allowing blood to leak back into the chambers of your heart.
  • Stenosis – This occurs when your valves thicken and stick together, preventing enough blood to flow through your valve.
  • Atresia – This occurs when your heart valve does not have a proper opening.
