What is Carotid Artery Disease?

Carotid arteries, located on each side of your neck, provide the main blood supply to your brain. Carotid Artery Disease (CAD) occurs when plaque builds up and hardens the inside of the arteries, which slows or blocks the flow of blood. CAD may cause a blood clot to form suddenly, and a clot that completely blocks the artery can lead to a stroke.
