Ankle Brachial Index
Checking for Healthy Blood Flow in Your Arms and Legs
What is Ankle Brachial Index?
Ankle brachial index is a quick, non-invasive test available at Mercy Health that compares blood pressure readings in a patient's legs and arms to determine if there is any narrowing or blockage in the blood flow of the extremities that has resulted in peripheral artery disease.
The results can also help to determine a patient's risk for stroke or heart or vascular disease. An ultrasound device and blood pressure cuff are used during the procedure. Patients may undergo the test while resting and immediately following exercise.
