Checking for Healthy Blood Flow in Your Neck
What is a Carotid Duplex?
A carotid duplex is a painless scan that combines two types of ultrasound testing – conventional ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound – to look for blockages in the carotid arteries. Carotid arteries are major blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain and face. Sound waves are used to produce a picture of the structure of your blood vessel, allowing the physician to see how effectively blood is moving through the carotid artery. This test takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.
When excess plaque builds up and hardens the carotid artery, a clot could occur and can lead to a stroke.
Carotid duplex testing is used to identify if a patient may have Carotid Artery Disease, which Mercy Health is fully equipped to treat with minimally invasive endovascular angioplasty and stent procedures.
